Robotic-Arm Residual Stress Analyzer — StressX by GNR

The StressX is a residual-stress analyzer built around a 6-axis robot arm that moves the measuring head straight to the part. It mounts on a trolley for on-site measurement or in a closed cabin for the laboratory, and its recirculating cooling system is built in, so no external cooling water is needed.

StressX — technical detail

StressX — key specifications

  • 6-axis robot arm with positioning accuracy and repeatability better than 10 microns
  • Psi goniometer: Psi scan −45° to +45° · selectable radius 120 / 140 / 160 mm · 2θ range 125°–164° (covers Fe, Al, Ni, Cu, Ti and Mg alloys)
  • X-ray generator 300 W (30 kV, 10 mA) · metal/ceramic tube with Cr anode as standard (Cu, Co, Fe, V, Ti, Mn optional)
  • DECTRIS Mythen multi-strip detector, air-cooled
  • Laser alignment accurate to better than 2 microns over a 150 ± 40 mm range — the head never touches the part
  • Monocapillary collimators 0.5 / 1 / 2 mm as standard; 120-micron polycapillary optional
  • Software for uni-, bi- and tri-axial stress analysis per ASTM E915 and UNI EN 15305

StressX — installation and use

Mounts on a four-wheel trolley for on-site measurement (1,150 × 1,530 × 1,800 mm, 250 kg) or in a closed cabin for laboratory use (1,200 × 1,200 × 2,000 mm, 350 kg). A self-contained recirculating water-cooling system with heat exchanger is built in, so no external cooling water supply is needed.

Applications named by GNR include checking shot-peening on gears, springs and weld beads. In GNR’s gear example, surface compressive stress rose from about −417 MPa to −1,267 MPa after shot peening.
